The question: I was recently relocated to the
UK from India. I was working as a software engineer with more than
two years' mainframe experience in banking and automobile domains.
How can I improve my employability? I have registered with quite a
few job sites but have not yet received any calls. I would like to
change from a programmer analyst role to a business analyst, but
almost all the recruiters are asking for experience. Is there any
course that I can do which will make me eligible to apply for
business analyst roles?
The solution:Seek qualifications or
move sideways
The best way to increase your employability would be to move
into a skill set which is more in demand. Just registering on job
sites will not always give you the opportunities you are looking
for. Taking a proactive approach to roles that are advertised will
provide a better result.
Whenever you see a role that matches your skills and profile,
respond to the job with a relevant and tailored CV and your
telephone will ring. Business analyst training could also be of use
to you - there are many companies that offer training in this area
and it would be a valuable qualification to pick up.
The best way to progress into a business analyst role is to try
for a sideways move within your current employer's business. If
this is not forthcoming, try to get involved in requirement
gathering or at any other stage of the development life cycle
within your current role, which will provide you with experience to
take forward.
