The open source Firefox browser is making significant
inroads among European internet users.
Research from French Web metrics company XiTi says Firefox,
launched by the Mozilla Foundation at the end of last year, is
being used by over 12% of UK internet users who have visited a
sample of web pages monitored by XiTi.
Although the overall market share of Firefox is much lower than
this figure among all internet users – around 5% in the US, for
instance – XiTi’s figures show there are plenty of European Firefox
users among the 60m-plus users who have downloaded the browser
since last year.
XiTi found that in Finland, more than 30% of users had the
Firefox browser when visiting the monitored pages, and in Germany
the figure was more than 24%. The UK was also behind the likes of
France (over 13%) in Firefox take-up, but ahead of both Spain and
Italy.
Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is still estimated to have around
90% of the global browser market.
