Security, proving the value of IT, and insufficient
board-level representation are the three major concerns of IT
directors, according to a survey by the British Computer
Society.
The survey also highlighted good professional skills as key to
the future of UK IT.
Giving an overview of the results, BCS chief executive David
Clarke said, “IT staff must take a more involved role with the
business when business managers are thinking about a problem or
opportunity.”
Too often IT gets involved once a business case has been made,
said Clarke. “If the definition [of the problem or opportunity] is
wrong, you get a poor IT solution.”
The survey was conducted between March and April among 391 IT
managers and directors who are BCS members.
Nearly 80% of respondents believe that government investment in
IT is inadequate or not applied efficiently, compared with 74% of
respondents in last year’s survey.
