Intel is expanding its 64-bit range with a family of new
processors for mid-tier enterprise servers.
Designed for use in servers with four or more processors, the
new chip platform is codenamed Truland and includes 64-bit Intel
Xeon multiprocessors and the Intel E8500 chipset.
Designed for dual-core technology, the chipset prepares
customers for innovations such as Intel virtualisation technology,
which allows users to run more than one operating system on the
same platform, and other demanding applications.
For the first time in an multiprocessor server Intel has
combined Intel Extended Memory 64, PCI Express, DDR2-400 memory and
demand-based switching with enhanced Intel SpeedStep
technology.
Intel said the features collectively helped to expand memory,
increase server performance and improve server reliability.
The 64-bit Intel Xeon processor multiprocessor is designed for
enterprise applications such as supply chain management, enterprise
resource management, customer relationship management and SME
databases.
Dell, Fujitsu Siemens, HP, Hitachi, IBM, NEC, Toshiba and Unisys
are committed to bringing out platforms with the new processors and
chipset.
