Japanese electronics giant Sony Corporation has
appointed a Welshman to head the company.
Sir Howard Stringer is the first non-Japanese person to be
chosen chairman of the whole organisation. Stringer was previously
the boss of the company’s US entertainment division, which has
outperformed much of the rest of the group.
Before joining Sony, Stringer had been president of
entertainment company CBS.
He replaces Nobuyuki Idei as chairman, who has been in the seat
for 10 years. Stringer will run Sony from offices in New York and
Tokyo.
Stringer said, "We have demonstrated in our US operations that
we can achieve significant cross-company efficiencies, and at the
same time deliver both quality and record returns.
"I believe the entire global organisation is hungry to make this
same transition, and all of us in senior management are committed
to achieving that goal."
