Red Hat has set up a new government business unit to
sell Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform into the public
sector.
The company has appointed Paul Smith to manage the global
operation. Prior to joining Red Hat, Smith was vice-president of
government operations at Veritas, which was recently acquired by
Symantec.
Smith has also run government sales operations at Netscape and
Oracle.
"Governments globally are looking for secure platforms to manage
complex information systems and more effectively deliver services
to citizens," said Matthew Szulik, Red Hat chief executive officer.
"Establishing a new business unit with Paul at the helm will enable
us to serve our government customers well."
Red Hat is expected to launch Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 later
this month, which will fully supply the latest 2.6 Linux
kernel.
