Veritas has revamped its storage management and virtualisation software with the launch of Veritas Storage Foundation 4.0.

Veritas said the software is part of its utility computing strategy and provides the basis for increasing the availability, manageability and performance of systems, cutting costs through shared storage infrastructure.

The product integrates Veritas' Volume Manager, storage virtualisation software and the Veritas File System, which manages multiple operating systems across storage devices and databases, as Veritas fleshes out its product roadmap for utility-based storage.

The software offers online file migration, to allow IT managers to move unimportant or rarely accessed files from expensive storage arrays to inexpensive storage devices through policy-based file distribution.

Another new feature is portable data containers, designed to provide heterogeneous storage support by allowing data to be shared between servers with different operating systems.

Veritas said it has also attempted to increase administrator productivity by adding templates that enable IT staff to provide new storage in a standardised way. It said this should reduce configuration errors.
