Fifty years' involvement in information systems has won BCS fellow Frank Land one of the world's top IT honours.

He has won the Leo Award for Lifetime Exceptional Achievement in Information Systems, established by the US Association for Information Systems.

Land was a programmer on the Leo computer at catering company J Lyons, which in 1951 ran the world's first business application.

He moved to the London School of Economics in 1967 as its first specialist researcher and teacher in IS. In 1982 he became the first professor of IS.

Land retired in 1992 but is still a visiting professor and is active in research.
