The Forestry Commission aims to cut the cost of setting up
all of its 2,500 new and upgraded PCs by £165,000 over the next two
years, by using automation software to configure new
systems.
The software, from systems management specialist Altiris, automates
the roll-out of operating systems and applications, removing the
need for an on-site IT support engineer and expensive third-party
rebuilds. This has slashed the price of setting up each PC from
about £100 to £34, the commission claims.
It has so far installed the software on 250 PCs and laptops, saving
more than £12,000.
