Using the Tomcat Java architecture and Apache Web Server as the
framework for an application server.
Research carried out by Butler Group for its Application Server
Report, published in June 2002, revealed that many application
servers are based on the open source work of the Apache Software
Foundation, specifically the Tomcat architecture and the Apache Web
server. The latter is the most widely used Web server in the
market, while the former is the basis upon which much J2EE
application server functionality is presently being built.
These systems pave the way for hybrid architectures wherein the
application server is ideally positioned to act in the role of
integrator. An interesting point to consider is that the J2EE
specification does not specifically highlight integration broker
technologies. It is an area for adding value recognised by the
majority of vendors and incorporated in various ways, into their
products.
