Security provider Vasco has released a handheld,
platform-independent device that eliminates the need for a
smartcard reader and associated software.

The Digipass 800 eliminates the need for banks and large firms
to duplicate logistical and operational efforts for smartcards,
such as personalisation, distribution, computer systems and
helpdesks, as well as devices for authentication and digital
signature recognition.
Vasco said smartcard users will be able to make a single
smartcard their standard interface with the banking system or
corporate network. Users will be able to gain secure remote access
via any medium, including the Internet, phone or fax.
Eddy de Legher, product manager at Vasco, explained, "Users
simply insert their existing smartcard into the Digipass 800, enter
their smartcard Pin and it is ready to use from any platform,
without the need for any other smartcard reader or client
software."
