Oracle has launched its next generation of Internet software,
which it claimed will reduce integration and maintenance cost of
e-commerce applications.
The new strategy is based on Oracle 9i Application Server and
the Oracle9i database which Oracle said can be tightly integrated
to reduce administration costs. However, although 9i Application
Server has been launched this week, 9i database will not be
available until the first half of next year, the company said.
"Oracle has created a sophisticated architecture that makes it
easy for any IT department to quickly scale their systems in two
separate dimensions: processing and storage," explained Carl
Olofson, program director at research company IDC.
"The ability of Oracle's customers to dynamically redistribute
IT resources, depending on their day-to-day, or even hour-to-hour
demands will ultimately get the greatest value out of their
computing investment," he said.
Oracle has also highlighted its significant investment in
wireless technology, with the integration of its Portal-to-go
technology into the 9i application server.
Thomas Kurian, Oracle's vice-president e-business, said 400
developers are working on wireless applications and Oracle's 9i
application server wireless edition "will connect in any language,
to any network, to any device, through any protocol".
A key feature of Oracle 9i is new caching technology that the
company said would improve performance and scalability of
e-business applications and Web sites.
