The outlook for IT professionals seeking work with Europe's hardware, software and telecoms suppliers looks positive, with more than 60% of firms expecting to recruit over the next 12 months.

Fifty-eight per cent of high-tech firms expect to take on more staff, compared with 8% that expect to lose staff, according to a survey of 300 senior executives in 20 countries by PR network Eurocom Worldwide.

More than 50% of the executives surveyed said they were more confident than a year ago that the recovery in the IT market had kicked-in, and 33% reported that it was more difficult to find skilled staff than a year ago.

The companies questioned listed software engineers as the most difficult staff to find, followed by project managers.

The biggest growth areas were IT security, outsourcing, mobile services and wireless computing.

Despite their overall optimism, executives showed some concern that the performance of the US economy could have an adverse effect on the growth of their business in the future.
