Northamptonshire County Council is to start using a web-based nutritional analysis system for its school meals.

It is the first council in the UK to sign up to use the Saffron Nutrition system online.

Northamptonshire will use the system to make sure it is meeting guidelines in providing children with nutritionally balanced meals in school.

The council will initially take part in a pilot for the system, which is provided by Fretwell-Downing Hospitality. It will do this by analysing the menus of a small number of schools.

The council eventually intends to make the web service available to all of the county's schools. It could be used by around 30 outside catering companies operating in the schools.
