Lucent Technologies' first-quarter profit of $338m was buoyed by $960m revenue from its mobile products and services.
Only last year Lucent turned in a $264m loss for the quarter, which ended 31 December.
Lucent reported $2.26bn revenue for the quarter, up 9% from the $2.08bn revenue for the same quarter last year.
Chairman and chief executive officer Patricia Russo said that as market spending increases, Lucent is poised to have revenue growth brought in by next-generation networks products and services.
Based on this quarter's results, the company expects to report a profit for the year, excluding any one-time gains or losses.
The $960m revenue generated by mobile products and services shows an increase of 32% compared the the same quarter a year ago.
Contract announcements with Verizon Communications and Qwest Communications International also helped boost income, along with strength in VoIP and metro optical fields.
Lucent remains focused on increasing its revenue sources by pursuing opportunities beyond the US, in the government division and in areas such as broadband access and VoIP.
