Google has developed administrative controls to help IT departments securely manage devices running Google's operating system (OS), Android, in a Google Apps environment.

The admin tools will provide secure management and sync capabilities for all major mobile platforms, with the ability to manage mobile devices from the browser without having to deploy dedicated servers, said Google.

Features include remote wipe of all data from lost or stolen mobile devices, device lock after a period of inactivity, password requirement on each phone and minimum lengths and required letters and numbers for more secure passwords.

"Many Android devices feature tight integration with Google Apps, including native applications for Gmail, Google Talk, and Google Calendar, as well as mobile access to Google Docs. Now any employee with an Android device running version 2.2 - personal or company-issued - can access their corporate information while allowing administrators to enforce data security policies," said Amit Singh, vice president of international sales for Google Enterprise, in a blog post.

"When the employee leaves the company, the administrator can withdraw access to corporate info, which allows the employee to continue to use their device if it's their own," added Singh.

The policies will be available from the Android Market by next week and can be enforced on devices with Google Apps Device Policy application installed.
