City trading firm Winterflood, the first UK company to use Cisco's Unified Computing Solution (UCS), has released details of its configuration and use.

Winterflood processes around 250 million market updates a day and trades in around 10,000 financial instruments in every significant financial market worldwide.

Applications include bespoke trading applications, and those deployed by VMware, an SQL database, e-mail services, infrastructure and voice applications.

Winterflood's Cisco UCS is a disk drive-free bladed compute farm connected to a 10Gb Ethernet network. A 4Gb fibre channel network is connected to a Clarion EMC storage area network (SAN). Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) is deployed within the UCS, and a single management and control system runs the complete system.

Winterflood said Cisco's UCS demonstrates significant superiority in space, power and cost over its previous offering, but declined to give details. "In addition, the system is easy to use and will enable Winterflood to deploy rapidly and move applications around," it said.
