Issues surrounding the impact of the internet on democracy are being considered for research by the BCS Sociotechnical Specialist Group.

A study of e-democracy by the group is likely to go beyond the issue of e-voting: it says issues might include the possible impact of e-referendums on traditional democracy and on increasing interest and involvement in politics.

The group focuses on human and organisational issues that arise from developing and using information systems both at work and in society.

People can join an e-mail discussion list on the group's website www.sociotechnical.org
