Tivoli network software limbers up for Olympics
Tivoli's Software Distribution technology will be deployed at the forthcoming Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, writes Paul Phillips
The product will deploy client/server and desktop applications across a network of 7,300 PCs, 540 servers, and 845 network switches.
The ability to distribute software consistently across complex, heterogeneous environments has become a business critical task.
Tivoli's software allows software to be dispatched and updated globally across the network in real time - even assuring software delivery to systems that are disconnected.
Rob Hailstone, IDC's director of EMEA software research, said, "There are other ways to handle the software distribution process, such as using thin client technology like Citrix or Microsoft's terminal server, which make changes on the server rather than at individual clients.
"However, there will be a category of customer - for example multinational companies - for whom Tivoli Software Distribution technology will be important, but this market will slowly disappear over time as people move to browser-based technology."
Tivoli Software Distribution 4.0 is available through Tivoli and authorised Tivoli distributors and resellers.
