The National Archives has partnered with ScotlandOnline for a project to put the 1911 census for England and Wales online.
More than 2km of shelving containing information collected from more than eight million households that relates to the 35 million people then living in England and Wales will be digitised over the course of the project. The digitised data will require half a petabyte of storage.
If all goes to plan, the public will have full access to the entire 1911 census from 2012.
Researchers anywhere in the world will be able to search across the fields of the census by name, address or the National Archives reference, and download images.
