Iona shipped the first two parts of its iPortal Suite solution at the Java Development Conference, in the form of the Orbix 2000 ORB and the iPortal Application Server.

The Irish ORB middleware vendor, which has rebranded itself into an e-commerce company, supports Enterprise Java Beans with the application server, which allows developers to produce business logic for middle-tier business-to-business e-commerce applications. Its support of other Java 2 Enterprise Edition elements such as Java Server Pages enables applications to run entirely on the server. It also uses a message broker infrastructure to hook legacy services into the e-commerce application.

Developers are now waiting for iPortal Integration Server and iPortal S/390 Server, which will ship during IONA World on 3 April. The final component of the suite, iPortal Server, will ship in the third quarter of the year. It will enable companies to control business partners' access to their sites through portal services, providing responses tailored to specific partners' needs.
