RockMelt ‘social browser’ launched

Kathleen Hall

A new social browser has been launched by the same people who created Netscape, the first commercial internet browser, 16 years ago.

RockMelt is being released as a limited public beta, open to anyone to sign up and test it out.

The browser window comprises three panels, with the two outer edges displaying a user's friends and their favourite social networking sites.

A post on the company's blog said: "With RockMelt, we've re-thought the user experience because a browser can and should be about more than simply navigating web pages. Today, the browser connects you to your world."

The site is built on Chromium, the open-source project behind Google's Chrome browser.
