Liken Group is claiming that for the first time, software asset management (SAM) is available as a fully hosted, managed service delivered to service level guarantees on an ongoing basis.
The new system is aimed at removing the operational pains of corporate SAM whilst simultaneously reducing costs.
Liken says that until now, normal practice included buying a SAM tool and implementing it internally. However, with the constant pressures on internal resources this is often difficult to implement well. In addition, the company claims that SAM tools cannot read a software licence, and automatic identification alone cannot keep pace with all of the software updates on the market.
Using the client’s own software or Liken’s free e-link licence management toolkit, data is gathered, at regular intervals from across the client’s network, in accordance with predefined client parameters.
The data is then sent via secure FTP or HTTP to Liken’s servers to check that executable files are accurately reconciled and Liken experts review the client’s internal controls and procedures for purchasing and storing software.
At the same time a complete independent risk assessment is compiled, identifying file-sharing software, outdated versions and any other installed software that impacts the security of the network.
