Linux software suite for smartphones unveiled

Trolltech has unveiled a Linux-based software suite to make it easier and faster for mobile phone manufacturers to roll out Linux-driven smartphones.

The company, based in Norway, has introduced the Qtopia Greensuite. The package allows manufacturers to source essential applications, such as a browser or media player, from a single source instead of having to get them from different areas of the open source community.

Availability of the Qtopia source code enables developers to tailor the user interface to fit end-user needs.

Qtopia Greensuite includes a Wap and HTML browser, a messaging solution, a multimedia package including video and audio recording, digital rights management, 3D graphics, voice over IP support, Java compatibility, and other features.

The solution will be showcased at next week’s ITU World Telecom show in Hong Kong. The solution will be available in the second quarter of next year.
