The European Commission has started a 78m euro (£55m) research initiative into computer grid technologies.
The money will be used to fund 23 different research projects. Grid technologies work by linking up large numbers of computers and devices to boost total processing power, and the Commission sees the technology as a way of developing its member states’ IT infrastructures.
The Commission said previous EU-funded grid research has been helping European industry “to deliver high quality, competitive goods and services in the automotive, aeronautical, financial, pharmaceutical and media sectors”.
Information society and media commissioner Viviane Reding said, “Grid and service-oriented architectures are crucial enabling technologies for economy-wide productivity and growth.
“They will make today's information and communication technology infrastructures more flexible and agile, enabling businesses to adapt and innovate faster, said Reding.
Three major grid projects will be getting a combined 36m euros from the total new research spend.
BEinGRID will run 18 business experiments to test and accelerate the take-up of grids in a range of European business sectors, including entertainment, financial, industrial, chemistry, retail, and textiles.
The XtreemOS project will extend the Linux operating system with grid services and support for virtual organisations.
And the BREIN initiative will adapt and deliver grid technologies from academic environments to support critical applications for logistics management at airports.
There are 20 smaller grid research projects in addition to these three.
