VeriSign has acquired security research company iDefense for $40m (£22.8m) to improve its managed security services to customers.

IDefense keeps a close eye on the hacker community and analyses software products for potential security flaws.

It has been instrumental in bringing users’ attention to flaws in Microsoft products and other software packages.

VeriSign will use this information to improve its advice to customers over the configuration of firewalls, intrusion detection systems and other security systems they have in place.

IDefense will continue to operate as an independent security consultant to other companies following the acquisition.
