Microsoft will use next week’s WinHec hardware conference in Seattle to finally roll out Windows 2003 Server x64 edition.
The Windows server is built to run on the latest Intel and AMD chips that support hybrid 32- and 64-bit processing.
Servers using the AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon EMT chips should benefit from the new operating system, due to the greater amount of memory the chip can support.
According to Microsoft, the 32-bit Windows OS uses 2Gbytes of “kernel” memory. Large enterprise applications also require 2Gbytes of “user” memory.
The way the 32-bit Windows operating system uses memory has meant it has been hard to meet the memory requirements of both the application and the operating system.
According to Microsoft, the 64-bit memory available from the new processors overcomes the 2Gbytes memory limitations for applications and operating systems.
Windows 2003 Server x64 Edition should boost enterprise application performance as enterprise software from companies such as SAP can benefit from the greater memory on offer.
Red Hat will also support dual-core processors in its new Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 operating system. The first beta update to RHEL 4 supports dual-core chips from both AMD and Intel.
The update to support dual-core processor working is part of Red Hat’s usual quarterly update to its main Linux enterprise operating system.
