Efficiency improves with SMS

Some hospitals are starting to reduce no-shows for outpatient appointments by up to 30% by using mobile SMS systems.

But despite such reductions, analyst Wireless Healthcare says revenues from SMS patient reminder services will still not reach £1m a year by 2010.

The analyst’s Mobile and Wireless Services for Outpatients report said the patient no-show reductions seen by hospitals using SMS are achieved despite only 20% of patients using the service.

Further SMS take-up at hospitals could be fuelled by further applications, such as using SMS for patient support and medication reminders, said Wireless Healthcare.
