The European Commission could place restrictions on the deployment of radio frequency identification tags following a consult- ation which closes at the end of March.

At present RFID deployment is limited to supply chain functions, but consumer groups have reacted angrily to its use by retailers to track individual items.

The commission's data protection and privacy body Article 29 has published a report on RFID use, highlighting concerns about RFID tags being used to track the movements and actions of EU citizens without their approval.

"The ability to collect a variety of data all related to the same person; track individuals as they walk in public places; enhance profiles through the monitoring of consumer behaviour... are all examples of uses of RFID technology that give rise to privacy concerns," said the report.
