Server sales boom

Antony Savvas

The European server market is booming with a 20.6% year-on-year increase in shipments and a 6.2% increase in the value of sales, said analyst Gartner.

For 2004, sales were over £8.72bn, with over two million servers shipped.

Gartner analyst Adrian O’Connell said, "Last year was particularly positive for vendors who were able to capitalise on the strong demand for low-end systems.

"The improving underlying demand continued to drive shipment growth, fuelled by the replacement cycle and beneficial exchange rates."

Gartner said Dell recorded the strongest growth in 2004, both in shipment and revenue terms. IBM maintained its lead in terms of revenue, and HP was top for shipment volumes.

Overall, the x86-based segment exhibited the strongest growth, with revenue increasing by 20% for the year. However, the Unix-based segment was weaker, with revenue declining.
