Packeteer has introduced a new version of its network optimisation appliance to control applications' bandwidth requirements.

On a network, application performance is affected by bandwidth, latency and emerging application architectures. Mark Fabbi, vice-president of research at Gartner, said Wan optimisation techniques can help reduce costs, improve application performance and reduce deployment complexity in at least 95% of situations.

The Packeteer 9500 appliance sits on a Wan and is designed to protect and accelerate business applications and monitor malicious use. According to Packeteer, the 9500 is able to manage bandwidth for 500 applications at speeds of up to 500mbps full-duplex or 1gbps in asymmetric mode.
