Autodesk releases Revit 6

Autodesk's Revit 6 software, a tool for architectural and interior-design companies, includes a "design options" feature and new team-collaboration capabilities.

The design options feature allows architects or engineers to present clients with alternatives for a proposed construction project from a single file rather than requiring designers to work with two separate files under the previous version, said Jason Winstanley, customer solutions manager at Autodesk.

Autodesk is the largest of the software companies making tools for architecture, engineering, construction and operations companies, according to US analyst company Daratech. The global market for this group of software is about $2.7bn annually, and Autodesk is the largest supplier because it has a combination of tools for various industries, said Daratech analyst Monica Schnitger.

Competitors include Bentley Systems, Graphisoft and Nemetschek.

Schnitger added that an important feature of Autodesk Revit 6 is that it bundles Revit with AutoCAD software from Autodesk, which will help smooth the transition for architects from 3-D design tools to Building Information Model technology, which has the database support.
