Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has released the Opteron 246, increasing the performance of its processors for two-way servers and workstations.

Price cuts and benchmark data revealed last week had pointed to an upcoming Opteron 246 launch. That data also suggested that AMD would release the Opteron 146 and Opteron 846 fairly soon.

The Opteron 246 runs at 2.0GHz, and comes with 1Mbyte of Level 2 cache. It is available immediately, and costs $794 (£494) in quantities of 1,000 units.
