SBC offers security service

SBC Communications has joined the band of managed security services providers Monday with the launch services that can manage corporate firewalls and IDSes (intrusion detection systems), as well as scan for network vulnerabilities.

The telecomms company will manage existing firewalls and IDSes or will install new ones for customers, said John Breen, regional vice-president for consulting services and engineering at SBC.

Breen said customers have the choice of firewall hardware from Cisco Systems or NetScreen Technologies, and for IDS, Internet Security Systems.' RealSecure. SBC can also manage customers' existing hardware. The company will also offer vulnerability assessments as a separate service.

So far, customers signing up have been medium-sized to large companies in the health care and insurance industries.

The managed security services are sold as a monthly charge, with $2,700 (£1,860) getting customers a package that includes managed firewall and IDS, as well as two scans of perimeter devices, Breen said. Prices increase based on the size of a network and the number of sites that need protection, he added.

The vulnerability assessment service will cost $21,000 (£14,472) for a single scan, he said.
