MPs praise BT's unbundling progress

MPs have delivered a vote of confidence in BT's ability to allow competition into its local exchanges.

BT's competitors have said the unbundling process, which promises affordable broadband Internet access, is sluggish, potentially hindering ecommerce growth in the UK.

However, yesterday Martin O'Neill, chairman of the Commons trade and industry committee, praised BT for its progress towards allowing competition into its local loop exchanges. "BT has moved psychologically quite quickly because they've realised that if they did not pull their fingers out the would be severely punished," he said.

Mr O'Neill maintained that BT had shown a change of pace in the unbundling process in recent weeks, and that the situation had improved greatly since the summer.
