Computer companies around the world are bidding to provide equipment for what promises to be the world's most hi-tech adventure show.

The Earth 2000 Show, a £20m production which will pit six contestants from each continent against a series of ecologically-themed challenges around the globe is set to air in more than 120 countries in the winter of 2000/2001. Apple, Compaq, PeoplesNet, PSINet and Vernon Computer Rentals are among the manufacturers bidding to supply hardware, software and Web hosting for the programme.

The contestants will keep in touch with their London-based mission control centre via laptops and GPS satellite backpacks, and viewers will be able to undertake their own challenges and keep track of the show via its Web site. The show, which is self-financed via commercial sponsorship, hopes to raise more than £40m for ecological causes.
