IBM has developed a new algorithm that simultaneously encrypts and authenticates information.
The new algorithm should simplify the previous approach which involved performing encryption and authentication in separate steps. It is also hoped to require just half of the previous time taken to accomplish the task.

IBM s a id that the new algorithm will be more effective on highly-parellel systems; something that previous scemes couldn't take advantage of. IBM R es arch have estimated that a parallel hardware implementation of this new scheme could achieve speeds of terabits per second of authenticated encryption. This would deliver higher performance encryption and authentication capabilities to th full range of systems.
Charles Palmer, manager, Network Security and Cryptography at IBM Research said:" Encryption and authentication will continue to be the core building blocks for securing Internet communication and computer systems. By combining the two steps, this security algorithm will help accelerate e-business processes throughout the industry."
