
PayPal suffers data centre outage
Online payment system PayPal suffered an outage last Friday that lasted for several hours, leaving
online merchants unable to use the platform to complete electronic transactions. The company blamed
the outage on a network hardware failure at one of its data centres.
Telecity Group to unveil 3.5 MW data centre in Manchester
Hosting provider Telecity Group has announced it will open a 3.5 MW data
centre in Manchester, UK, next year. The company also said it has secured an additional 3 MW of
customer capacity at its Harbour Exchange data centre in the Docklands area of London.

RES Software has announced the appointment of Chris Hammans as director of business development strategic alliances, EMEA. Hammans will be
based in the UK and will be responsible for developing key business relationships and revenue. He
held previous positions at VMware and Citrix.
Gartner warns of data growth challenge
Research from analyst Gartner has revealed that rapid data growth is set
to be the biggest challenge facing businesses in the near future. According to the research, 47% of
firms believe data growth will be problematic for them, compared to 37% that thought scalability
was a major issue. In addition, 36% of respondents expressed concern about network congestion.
Microsoft sees 51% jump in quarterly profits
Microsoft has posted a 51% rise in first fiscal quarter profits, with a strong uptake in its software
and services. The quarter, which ended in September, was posted at $5.4 billion, up from $3.6
billion in the same period last year. Revenue also increased 25% to $16.2 billion, from $12.9
billion a year ago.
