E-Skills UK, the sector skills council for IT, has appointed Logica CEO Andy Green as its new chairman.

Andy Green replaces Larry Hirst CBE, who will retire as chairman of e-Skills UK and as chairman of IBM Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"I'm very pleased to accept the role of chairman of e-Skills UK. Technology is absolutely vital to the future prosperity of our country, holding the key to innovation and global competitiveness across the whole economy," said Green.

"E-Skills UK is uniquely placed to unite industry, educators and government in action on the technology skills that are so critical to this economic growth and I look forward to building on the great results that they have delivered to date," he added.

Outgoing chairman Hirst said: "Since joining the board of e-Skills UK in 2001 and being appointed Chair in 2004, I have watched the company grow from strength to strength. I am particularly proud of our initiatives in schools and universities, which have gone a long way to ensuring we have the future pipeline of talent we need into the IT industry."

Green was appointed CEO of Logica in 2008 after spending 21 years at BT. He was recently ranked in the top 50 most influential people in IT.
