Opera upgrades Mini mobile browser

Norwegian browser maker Opera has updated its Mini mobile browser, which should speed up Nokia S40 feature phones with limited memory, such as the 5130 XpressMusic, 6300 and the 2700 handsets.

The update includes a new optimised browser skin that allows more pages to be open at the same time, faster scrolling through pages, and better performance overall.

The update will also benefit phones with a small screen size, such as the Sony Ericsson K550i and Sony Ericsson W810i phones, or those who often run out of memory, Opera said.

Opera Mini compresses data by up to 90% before sending content to the phone. This reduces data load, which makes browsing cheaper on a pay-per-MB data plans, especially when roaming.

Opera Mini runs on more than 3,000 mobile phones owned by over 61 million users worldwide, the company said.
