VMware has launched vCenterCapacityIQ
, a product which provides capacity management for VMware
virtualised environments.
The virtualisation company said that CapacityIQ allows IT
administrators to "right-size capacity in a dynamic virtual
environment". Users can analyse what IT capacity is available and
what is being used; forecast what is needed; and plan when capacity
will run out.
The product enables companies to assess the impact of changes
and forecast future needs based on consumption patterns.
According to VMware, CapacityIO helps IT managers reduce cost by
reclaiming unused capacity. It is also able to analyse resource
usage patterns and automatically generates a list of virtual
machines that have been over-provisioned, allowing administrators
to reclaim unused resources instead of purchasing additional
capacity.
VMware said the software can be used to avoid potential business
and service disruptions by modelling the impact of a planned
change, such as an acquisition or new application, or an unplanned
outage, failure or disaster.
As Computer Weekly has previous reported, virtualisatioon
requires
careful planning to maximise return on investment.
