Microsoft has released a beta version of Visual Studio 2010
and the next version of its .net framework for building web
services applications in Windows.
Available to Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscribers, the
products offer built-in tools for Windows 7 and Microsoft
SharePoint 2010, together with support for Silverlight and
multicore processors. Microsoft claims applications built using the
new version of the .net framework will be 81% smaller than
applications built in the previous version of the framework.
The tools are aimed at getting software developers to make the
most of the new functionality offered in Windows 7 and SharePoint
2010, the next release of Microsoft's portal and collaboration
platform. S Somasegar, senior vice-president of the Developer
Division at Microsoft, said, "Now is the time to test drive the new
functionality and features in these releases, which address
everything from Windows 7 and SharePoint support to collaboration
and lifecycle management."
Microsoft has amended the licensing, with a new top-level
subscription for MSDN, which gives software developers test and
development rights to use Microsoft server software (including
Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008), Microsoft
Office, and premium Visual Studio tools).
