In what has been touted as a breakthrough in tape storage,
Imation says it has developed a tape cartridge that supports
multiple terabytes of native capacity on a single MP tape
cartridge.
The Imation LTO-5 tape cartridge offers 3.2Tbytes of compressed
storage and data transfer rates of up to 360mbps, Imation said. The
cartridge is due to launch in early 2010.
Anna Lidén, product manager for magnetic and commercial storage
at Imation Europe, said, "Metal particulate media is a proven
standard in data storage, and with MP-based LTO-5, we will be
almost doubling the capacity of the cartridges."

3.2Tbytes of compressed storage and data transfer rates of up to
360mbps.
Enhancements in servo technology and improved data compression
ensure the same length of tape can store more information, allowing
datacentre managers to keep their existing footprint without adding
space to accommodate the growth in primary storage.
Proprietary TeraAngstrom technology creates magnetic media with
a smoother surface and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR),
delivering reduced errors and faster transfer rates, according to
Imation.
