Road warriors who want to use the Firefox browser on their
mobile computing devices but find themselves cramped for memory can
now download a compressed version ofFirefox Mobilethat runs from any CDROM, DVD, USB drive, or hard drive without
installation.
If the mobile device happens to be a mobile phone, Mozilla has
also announced beta versions of
Firefox for Nokia's Maemo tablet PC and Windows Mobile
phones.
Aimed strictly at developers, the new releases, dubbed Fennac,
help improve the user experience with "a much nicer looking" theme
and by fixing many usability issues, said Stuart Parmenter,
Mozilla's mobile team technical lead, writing on his
blog.
"We have revamped how you install add-ons, improved our download
manager and the whole look of the application," he said. "We have
started work on making forms on web pages easier to use, providing
a nicer combo box user interface than before."
He said software developers were starting to make some interest
add-ons for the Fennac platform. They include
GeoGuide,
which uses the new location-aware APIs to show things like maps and
weather close to where the phone is, and
GraffiTwit,
a Twitter client that lets users write tweets and post images they
have drawn.
