As part of a plan to broaden its mobile services
portfolio, Sybase iAnywhere has re-engineered itsAfariamobile device management and
security solution to now support the Open Mobile Alliance Device
Management (OMA DM) standards for device management.
The latest release of Afaria expands upon its existing
device management and security capabilities by offering from a
single console OMA DM-based device management functionality for a
wide array of mobile device types, including laptops, smartphones
and now,
open standards-based smartphones and PDAs.
Afaria offers clientless device management using
OMA DM
standards and technology with the ability to initially
provision device configurations via SMS using OMA DM. It also
supports trusted server configuration allowing for silent
management of devices with policy editors able to define device
configuration settings for GPRS, WLAN access points, Session
Initiation Protocol (SIP), Skinny Client Control Protocol and Cisco
Call Connect. Another key feature is over-the-air application
delivery, installation and activation.
“OMA is pleased to see this deployment of its DM Enablers in
Sybase’s enterprise product,” said Rick Brunner, Chairman of OMA’s
Board Interoperability Committee. “This deployment demonstrates
further validation of OMA’s broad work in interoperability and its
specific success with management objects for provisioning,
diagnosing and managing clients for enterprise deployments.”
The new the solution now uses the native OMA DM client to manage
Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices, including the Nokia N70, Nokia E65,
Nokia E71 and the recently announced Nokia E75, as well as all
other Nokia devices.
Samsung is also part of the equation and in pursuing its
ambitions Sybase has entered into a partnership with Samsung SDS to
deliver the handset giant’s SDS Enterprise Mobile Service over the
Sybase Unwired Platform (SUP).
The SDS Enterprise Mobile Service comprises a cloud computing
technology-based mobile infrastructure and backend integration with
enterprise applications, such as ERP, CRM, SCM, etc. Samsung SDS
will utilise Sybase’s mobile enterprise application platform within
its enterprise mobile infrastructure and will share marketing and
sales, as well as service development.
“Both [Sybase and Samsung] understand the market need to move
beyond tactical, siloed mobile applications toward more strategic
applications that significantly increase productivity and lower
total cost of ownership. Sybase Unwired Platform is the perfect fit
for powering enterprise mobile service offerings,” commented Seung
An Park, executive vice president, Research & Business
Development, Samsung SDS
