Microsoft isreportedlyplanning a series of new
programs and services for mobile phones.
The offerings will include an online marketplace for
distributing software to mobiles that run Microsoft's Windows
Mobile operating system. The move is seen as a way of increasing
the OS' smartphone marketshare.
Apple introduced its iPhone App Store last year, and BlackBerry
maker RIM has just launched an online apps store for
developers.
The difference with Microsoft is that it does not make
smartphones, and relies on turning a buck purely through
software.
Redmond is also said to be planning a new version of its mobile
operating system, in the form of Windows Mobile version 6.5.
