Netgear embraces open source

Netgear is supporting the open source developer community with the introduction of its WGR614L wireless-G router.
The WGR614L is supported by an open source router community, which Netgear said would provide open source firmware downloads, forums, blogs, articles, source code, and user guides, and provides users with support by open source experts.
Som Pal Choudhury, senior product line manager for advanced wireless at Netgear, said: "The open source community will enable users to exchange ideas and troubleshoot issues." The community is also developing traffic shaping applications, redirections to captive portals for hotspots, guest access via a separate SSID, upstream and downstream QOS, and intelligent bandwidth monitoring, according to Choudhury.
The WGR614L provides one 10/100 Internet WAN port, four-port 10/100 LAN switch, and an 802.11g access point to support wireless connectivity at speeds of up to 54 Mbps. Netgear said it also offers static and dynamic routing with TCP/IP, VPN pass-through (IPSec, L2TP), and supports networking protocols including NAT, PPTP, PPPoE, DHCP (client and server), and Bigpond.
