Hitachi is shipping a 320GB notebook hard drive that combines high capacity with improved power efficiency.

The company said the 7,200rpm 7K320 Travelstar Hard Drive improved application performance by 12% and lowered power consumption by 22%. It added that the drive's quieter acoustics improved the experience of watching movies or listening to music on a notebook PC.

The 2.5in drive has optional bulk data encryption for increased data security.

Hitachi plans to ship enhanced-availability (EA) models to provide high-capacity storage for low-duty-cycle, 24x7 applications.

The Travelstar 7K320 is now shipping worldwide. The EA version is expected to ship in the third quarter of 2008.
