IBM is bringing itsPower6chip technology to small and
medium-sized customers, combining it with a new virtualisation
platform to help them consolidate server capacity, save energy and
manage IT costs more effectively.
The new platform,
PowerVM, provides virtualisation solutions for operating
systems including AIX, Linux and i5/OS for System i customers.
Virtualisation technology allows users to run services and
applications on fewer servers.
Used in conjunction with the new
System p servers and
BladeCenter servers, which have been designed for SMEs, PowerVM
will let users create up to 160 virtual partitions in a single
system, dramatically improving server utilisation.
Formerly known as Advanced Power Virtualisation (APV), PowerVM
software is available in Express, Standard and Enterprise
Editions.
All three editions allow System p servers to run Linux x86
binary applications unmodified without recompilation, in addition
to Unix and Linux on Power applications.
