Ford Motor Company's Land Rover division has begun a pilot programme to deploy and active radio frequency identification (RFID) system to synchronise the delivery of auto parts from suppliers to Land Rover's assembly plant in the West Midlands.

The pilot is being supported by funding from a central government grant administered by the University of Warwick, which selected Savi Technology as the RFID supplier after conducting an 18-month worldwide evaluation programme.

Land Rover said the RFID hardware and software from Savi is designed to improve visibility, inventory management and asset utilisation.

The implementation is also expected to reduce losses, assembly plant disruptions and time spent locating assembly parts.

Phase two of the project will enable 18 suppliers and Land Rover to locate, track and deliver containers carrying various auto parts.

Real-time information on RFID-tagged assets is shared among the partners and is automatically transmitted to mobile devices.
